Free any iPhone from the bonds of AT&T with ZiPHONE. This process is incredibly easy and I have upgraded my 1.1.1 all the way up to 1.1.4. I can use any carrier I choose and install applications from the installer menu. I performed this process on a 4GB iPhone I purchased the day they came out in 2007. I had no issues with the update and it took less than 15 minutes total. This walk through is for Mac users however, I am sure there are similar tutorials for Windows users.
Here is the simple process:
1. Open iTunes. I used the latest version of iTunes 7.6.2 and the upgrade went flawlessly.
2. Sync your iPhone with iTunes or just open the box of your new OTB iPhone.
3. Restore your iPhone from iTunes by holding OPTION + Click restore. This will bring up a dialog menu allowing you to choose your .ipsw file. You can download the 1.1.4 .ipsw
here. It will come zipped and it should stay that way. Don’t un-zip the file. Choose the .zip file from iTunes and let the phone update. This can take 5-10 minutes in some cases. Once the update is complete you will see the cable and globe images on your iPhone. If you are upgrading from another unlocked version, you will see an incorrect SIM message in iTunes. Leave iTunes open.
4. Run ZiPHONE. Download it
here. When you open ZiPhone click the “Do it all” button. This will take care of everything in one shot. Your iPhone will go black and code will scroll over the screen for a few minutes. My process to appx. 5-7 minutes to complete and I left my SIM card in the entire time. Once the process was complete iTunes recognized my iPhone and my carrier was still T-Mobile.
5. Sync your iPhone with iTunes to recover your contacts and other items and enjoy your updated & unlocked iPhone.

We’re still sifting through the details but it appears there is a painless GUI software unlock available for the iPhone. Released today over at Zibri’s Blog (not a member of the DEV Team), there is a standalone Windows software package that will unlock your OTB 1.1.3 iPhone with no baseband downgrade. We have not tested this unlock as it’s for Windows and we don’t have any Windows machines lying around. If you do run the unlock please post your results for all to see.
Link to unlock at Zibri’s Blog.

I have been looking for an unlock solution to my 1.1.2 iPhone I purchased back in December. With the release of 1.1.3 we all seemed to be feeling that an unlock solution was not far off, however, it’s been nearly a month and I just couldn’t wait any longer. I have been wary to try the SIM card unlock solutions and couldn’t see spending $50+ on something shipped over from God-knows-where overseas. Since I am incredibly impatient, I decided to give the iPhone Unlock Card from
Mobile.Brando.com.hk a try. It has been the cheapest solution I have found so far and at $33.00 shipped to my door, it promised to get me where I wanted to be.
I ordered the item on Jan 26 and it took 10 days to get to me. The SIM unlock was packaged really well but was not what I was expecting to see. I guess it makes more sense than what I was expecting, but it’s super thin and looks like touching it will break it. It came in a plastic snap case and was wrapped in plastic. After getting everything put together, clipping the corner of my current SIM to make room for the tiny chip embedded in the SIM unlock, I popped it in my 1.1.2 iPhone. Sure enough I have yet another fully unlocked iPhone. I will verify that the SIM unlock method sold on the mobile.brando.com.hk website for $33.00 does work.
I am still anticipating the software unlock and will switch over once it’s released. I feel more secure about having something written into the software than a tiny little widget keeping me in touch with the rest of the world but until that day I am a happy camper.

If you have a jailbroken 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 iPhone or iPod Touch, you can now upgrade to the newest 1.1.3 firmware directly from the “Installer.app”. Over a broadband connection the upgrade takes anywhere from 10-45 minutes so you will most likely want to have it plugged in. To perform the upgrade you will have to have a previously jailbroken device and the “Installer.app” on your device. This upgrade should not be performed on unlocked 1.1.(x) phones as there is no unlock solution for 1.1.3 iPhones.

A United States spy satellite is due to head back to earth and there isn’t much anyone can do about it. The U.S. government is “monitoring” the AWOL object and has no idea when it will impact earth and is not disclosing where they estimate the satellite will hit. So in the spirit of the occasion, we’re firing up a contest.
To enter the contest register as a commenter, give your best guess for when you think the satellite will impact earth, and where you think the impact site will be. The commenter who picks the correct date, and location closest to the actual impact site, will win a SIM unlock for the iPhone. If you’re betting on a water impact (you’ve got a 70% chance) provide a longitude and latitude to mark your spot.

Today an iPhone died.
The champ hit the mat when he got plugged into my Alpine CDE-9852 with the factory iPod interface cable. I have plugged a 1.0.2 iPhone in multiple times and aside from a bit of GSM buzz once in a while it worked great. The deceased was running version 1.1.1, and upon being plugged in, was down for the count.
The screen flickered a couple times then thin lines formed the length of the screen and the champ was unresponsive. When the medics attempted to resuscitate there were reports of large amounts of heat emanating from the back of the patient. After two hours of attempting to revive the device, there was no hope.
We took the iPhone to the Genius Bar and a new champ emerged from the shadows. The Mac Genius removed the SIM and re-activated the iPhone in-store and we were back on the road. I assume that this is a “Thankfully I have an AT&T contract” situation. So a word to those with Alpine head units, be careful with who you send into the ring.

At this time it’s still a bit complicated, mainly because you need a Windows box to do it, but there is a 1.1.3 Jailbreak available. You will need iBrickr and a spare 30 minutes, but it does work. Just visit
